Embossing has found very different applications in woodworking:

• full-surface embossing to give coated and uncoated wood material surfaces the structure of solid wood
• full-surface embossing to add special effects to the structure of solid wood, e.g. woodworm look (Structuring)
• local embossing to structurally set off symbols and protect their coloring from abrasion, e.g. in toy production
• linear embossing to provide wood packaging with an exclusive gold cut or to create decorative strips
• linear embossing to match the surface of the edge furniture panels to the panel surface

Often the process of embossing is connected with simultaneous or subsequent varnishing. One possibility to combine embossing with simultaneous varnishing is the transfer finish process.
