Maximum distance that one of the linear axes X, Y or Z at a CNC-machining center can cover. The axis travel is usually limited by software limit switches, hardware limit switches and the length of the linear guide.

Software limit switches are used to limit the mechanical axis travel without impairment. At reaching a preset stop position, the machine makes a pre-programmed motion, e.g. a backward movement, or stops.

Hardware limit switches serve as additional safety for programming errors or failure of the software limit switch. Usually, with passing a certain position, a switch will be actuated and the machine stops. This avoids damage of the drive and the guides.
